Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is taught across all year groups from Year 7 – 11. Most year groups have one timetabled lesson per week (Year 7 have one per fortnight) which revolves around the key themes of:
- Health and Wellbeing
- Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
- Living in the wider world
All lessons have an active learning approach and very often contain discussions, debates, role plays and creating display materials and presentations. Students are encouraged to form their own informed opinions whilst respecting the rights of others to hold different ones. Visitors are welcomed into lessons to support the work of the teacher and to provide expert information and approaches as necessary. All visitors work within the framework of a faith school and understand and respect our mission of educating our young people for life – Head, Heart and Hands.
In Years 7 and 8 students are usually taught in mixed ability House groups and we focus on 5 modules of work. Where it is felt appropriate by the SEND department, a small number of students are taken out of the main teaching programme and taught separately, at a slower pace, with topics suiting their particular needs.

- Puberty and Hygiene
- Mental wellbeing where students begin to recognise stress triggers and look at ways to manage stress
- Citizenship
- British Values
In Year 8 the work enhances that of Year 7 by focusing on:
- Healthy living looking at drugs, alcohol, smoking and diet
- Work related learning which includes the Plymouth Employability Passport
- Citizenship and Parliament
- Managing Money
In Years 9 and 10 students prepare for the ASDAN Personal and Social Development (PSD) course. Students experience 5 key modules of work:
- Healthy Eating
- Healthy Living
- Parenting Skills
- Managing Social relationships
- Cultural Diversity/Individual Rights and Responsibilities
Currently all students in Year 11 are offered an opportunity to experience a one week Work Experience placement which takes place in the last week of October. During the Autumn term students use PSD lessons to focus on preparing for WEX, writing CV’s and using an online skills checker to see which groups of jobs would be most suitable for them. During the spring term we look at Relationships, with a focus on abusive relationships and Mental Health, exploring a range of strategies to help maintain mental wellbeing and signposting opportunities for help.
In Year 12 the curriculum covers preparing for living independently either at HE or while at work. They are introduced to preparing for HE applications and this includes a Personal Statement Day.
In all year groups the timetabled curriculum is supported by collapsed curriculum days (Dimension Days). PSHE supports/is supported by and links with the students’ work in:
