Entry Requirements:
5 GCSE passes at grade 4 and above AND have studied the sciences at GCSE level and have
achieved 2 grade 6 passes in either GCSE Separate Sciences or GCSE Trilogy Science. You must
have a grade 5 in Maths at GCSE.
You can:
Apply to enrol on the ‘A’ Level Biology A course. Biology is the study of living organisms and
their environment.
This will mean:
You will be able to develop essential knowledge and understanding of key concepts in Biology
and in their application. You will undertake frequent practical work, including a residential field
trip, and you will have opportunities through visits and schemes such as the Nuffield Bursary to
interact with qualified biologists in a variety of fields. You will also develop competence and
confidence in practical, mathematical and problem solving skills.
This course will appeal to any student who:
Asks questions about how their body works and who is curious and excited by the living world
around them. The course is designed to stimulate that curiosity and enable you to develop your
understanding.
You will:
Study 6 modules to gain the knowledge to embark on the next stages of your science pathway. Practical work will be an important part of the course and practical skills will be assessed in all examination papers. In year 13, there will be a separate endorsement of practical skills.

● Module 3 – Exchange and Transport
● Module 4 – Biodiversity, evolution and disease
● Module 5 – Communications, homeostasis and energy

With this subject you could:
Apply to University to study any degree course in a biological science or health related
discipline. The course is also essential for anyone considering courses in medicine, nursing and
related courses, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacology or pharmacy. Biologists are
employed throughout industry and, as a rigorous and demanding subject with transferable
skills such as numeracy and problem solving, other professions such as accountancy, law,
personnel and management seek to employ them too.

Paper 2: Biological Diversity
Paper 3: Unified Biology
+ A-Level practical endorsement (reported separately).
